about

A few months ago, the idea started to appeal to me to create a song using entirely synthesizers, just to explore the greater possibilities of sounds and textures. The process of creativity was very different; instead of having ideas for different live instrument parts in my head, I made it up as I went along and tweaked sounds and parts until I liked them. It was very fun.

The lyrics aren't actually representative of my feelings. I love living in cities. But I just started thinking of all these metaphors about cities and artificiality, and comparing it to biblical creation and whatnot. It just made sense in my head. Hopefully it's not too corny.

lyrics

Tasteless stucco walls march straight from here to the edge of town
And a thousand signs with a thousand lights tell of cheap fast food
I never felt so sad as when I gave the cashier crisp new bills and then she called out my little number, I never met her eye

She probably takes the bus here everyday
She probably wishes it didn't stop here

Later in the day as natural light in this city fades
The twilight turns on headlights like fireflies
I've heard that somewhere else the nighttime sky is full of twinkling lights
But thank you signs for fast food, the sky's a murky grey

I've never seen a natural tree
Many in this city surrounded by concrete

A man can make buildings ten miles high
And fill them with people who want to cry
Creation: The human dream

We're just apes who got some big ideas
We're just apes who dreamed of bigger trees
Creation: The human dream

A walk winds through the park and just reminds of all the time I spend
in this forest, this glassy forest, but nevermind

I never set foot outside of these walls
I never had reason, this city has it all

Back in the beginning there was nothing
But man was frustrated, he could not see
So man said, "let there be light"

A man can make buildings ten miles high
And fill them with people who want to cry
Creation: The human dream

We're just apes who got some big ideas
We're just apes who dreamed of bigger trees
Creation: The human dream

Admit it, this city makes you smile
It's so full of life and blithe denial
You can't hate the human dream
