about
I've been inspired by soul more recently, and less by rock. I've also been playing piano like a fool, and so the natural result was this big piano-soul-ballad thing.
The lyrics are pretty straightforward and autobiographical. I graduated from college and have been having fun and spending all my money before I look for a job (soon because I am broke.) So this song is about how I have felt these past months: having fun, but with nowhere to go.
lyrics
Breakfast burritos in last night's clothes
We're talking about that party, you know how it goes
Well if I acted like a fool, or maybe a tool, and did I hook up, or did I throw up?
And if so in what order?
Hold that thought for just one second, that waitress is cute
Smooth my hair in the napkin dispenser, I know just what to do
Oh hey, how you doin? Oh my card was declined?
Oh well, nevermind, that's just me and my life
Well it's you and me and all of our friends
In a car that's just stalled at the bottom of the hill
And it's you and me and all of our friends
We could only slow down if we were moving at all
And we can't stay here, but there's nowhere to go
You say my future seems far and well, I agree
But you say that's not what you meant, it's something I can't even see
Well I don't want a loan and I don't want a car,
and I don't want a wife or a house or a credit card
I'd rather have one hundred whims than a single good plan
And I'd rather drive down to the beach and sleep in the sand
You say that don't work and you say that ain't right
When I was your age I was slaving away day and night
And maybe when I'm fifty I'll realize I've failed
And my mind will only focus on how I never could nail
How to love the things I do, and how to do the things I love
And my eyes will just narrow as I'm looking from above
But I just can't imagine regretting these days
No I just can't imagine regretting these days in a whiskey haze
Well it's you and it's me and it's all of our friends
We're just smoking our cigarettes and drinking our wine
And laughing and sighing and losing track of the time
Well it's you and me and all of our friends
In a car that's just stalled at the bottom of the hill
And it's you and me and all of our friends are just hanging out
We could only slow down if we were moving at all
And we can't stay here, but there's nowhere to go
